4th Annual Fair Housing Conference Registration
After three successful years of providing beneficial education to local landlords, housing agency representatives, cities and villages, and agencies that manage/develop housing, the City of Norfolk Housing Division is continuing their efforts to educate individuals about fair housing rights at the upcoming fourth annual Fair Housing Conference. The conference will be held on Tuesday, April 2nd, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m at the Lifelong Learning Center in Norfolk. Registration and a continental breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m.
For the second year, Sara McCue, an attorney at Baird Holm LLP in Omaha, Nebraska will be presenting the information. McCue’s practice focuses on the Fair Housing Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Her presentation for this year’s conference is “caselaw” heavy, providing extensive examples from recent legal cases to encourage understanding and participation.
This year, Sara will be discussing fair housing basics which include an explanation of the protected classes, analyzing discrimination, and developments with respect to sexual orientation and gender identity in housing. She will also review the step-by-step process for analyzing accommodation requests, including multiple examples from court cases. There will be discussion on harassment issues in housing that will also explain the liability a housing provider might face. Finally, there will be a discussion on HUD’s guidance on Limited English Proficiency issues, as well as a review of related legal precedence.
Due to limited space, those wishing to attend the conference are encouraged to register early. If registered before March 22, 2019, the conference fee is $50 or $75 if registered after March 22nd. Current housing choice voucher landlords can register early for a fee of $35 before March 22, or $50 if registered after March 22. All registration fees include continental breakfast, lunch, and break. There will be no Continuing Education Credits available for realtors or attorneys.
