On Saturday, November 26, ten amateur roller derby teams from across the Midwest will come together in Norfolk for a Mixer. Skaters will be coming from No Coast Derby Girls in Lincoln, Omaha Roller Girls, Oskaloosa Mayhem Girls Roller Derby in Oskaloosa IA, Dakota City Demolition Crew in Humboldt IA, Sioux City Roller Dames, TRI CITY Rolling Thunder in Kearney, Ace’s & Sk8s in Lead SD, and your own Bruizin’ Bettys. The men will also have a mixer with skaters from the Sioux City Kornstalkers, and The Cowtown Butchers in Kansas City.
Roller derby is a full contact skating sport, which is played on a flat, oval track. Matches, called bouts, consist of two 30-minute halves (in the case of the mixer, bouts will have shortened, 20-minute halves). Each team sends four blockers and one jammer onto the track for each play, or jam. The jammer scores by passing members of the opposing team, while the blockers employ all legal means–hip checks, shoulder hits, body blocking–to stop the jammer from getting through the pack. Roller derby is a highly competitive and intensely physical sport that combines athletic ability with strategic decision making.
The mixer will be a great combination of experienced and new skaters with some good competition and fun. The action begins at 6:30 pm at the DeVent Center, doors open at 5:30. Tickets are $12 at the door; children and under are free. Proceeds from the bout will be going to the Salvation Army.
